The only troops who deserve a parade are those who were drafted against their will or fought in an actual defensive war like WWII. Anyone else who volunteered should see it as a job that they were already paid for.

A big part of why it exists is that the rich can dodge it though. If they were at risk of actually getting drafted, they’d be less likely to draft. So him dodging it absolutely is a big problem

No drafting is the problem. No one should go to war against their will. Protecting the country with your life should be a choice. Unmotivated soldiers are useless anyway.

I mean, if unmotivated soldiers were useless then drafting wouldn’t really be a thing. You get a hell of a lot of motivation to survive when you’re thrown into combat.

ok not useless but a lot less useful, especially compared to trained military

And a major contributor to that problem is, wouldn’t you say, a problem? What you just said doesn’t address my point at all. Drafts are a problem, that doesn’t make it the only one

I don’t care that someone can dodge the draft, because there shouldn’t be drafts in the first place, so dodging drafts is not the problem

edit: sorry I misunderstood your comment I see what you mean now

Right. And part of why there’s a draft, the thing you have a problem with, is that wealthy people can avoid it. It’s literally a cause of the problem. I do not understand how you don’t think the cause of problems isn’t part of those problems?

Attacking Trump from the right is a losing battle. Fuck war and fuck memes that glorify conscription.

Here’s the thing…I straight fukcing loathe Trump, and the fact that slightly more than half of this country voted him into office… AGAIN… makes me ill, but knowing what I know about what happened in Vietnam from a father that has told stories, countless documentaries, and movies… I cannot help but wonder if, had I the wealth to do so, would I have not used that wealth to prevent my own son being drafted? I say that as a vet, myself… Albeit one who went in and got out in-between the first gulf war and Afghanistan. I want badly to paste that label on him… And given where we are now, I very much wish he had gone to Vietnam… But I have to acknowledge the fact that I may not have done any different…

And that’s okay. I can understand not wanting to see your son get put in harm’s way.

Of course it would be in really bad taste for your son to subsequently ask for a military parade in his honor. Just like it is when Trump does it.

I would dodge the shit out of any draft. I’m no soldier, I’m not going out there to die in the first battle “for my country”

He’s demanding a dictator-style military parade that will be on his birthday. The US hasn’t had a military parade in over 30 years, when the Gulf War was declared a victory in 1991.

More people voted for no one than either of the candidates actually. That’s the real issue, our politicians are so bad people feel like it’s pointless to vote for either. Which is obviously not the case, but Dems aren’t exactly doing a good job, rachet theory and all

If it helps any, he was elected by more like 20-some-odd-percent of the country. People who didn’t vote and Democrats lost to 60-something million nutjobs.

And I hear you on who wouldn’t try to get out of being drafted if they could, but he’s not only spent a lot of time to insult and dismiss all kinds of service, he’s never told the truth about faking injury to avoid service, he’s never said the draft isn’t wonderful. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t threaten to institute it again, no doubt over the horrified silent disagreements of his sycophantic circle.

I’d rather have Lex Luthor as president. Depending on the universe he was fairly corrupt too, once you got past the absolute hatred of Superman he was a genius, and governed like one.

It’s the height of American hypocrisy … as if they couldn’t get any higher

They constantly celebrate and glorify their military and military dead and military heroes … yet they’re set to have a big ol’expensive parade for one of the most cowardly, undemocratic leaders they’ve ever had.

My last day at Lowe’s (very vet friendly) was Memorial Day. Our GM told us in standup that it was a solemn day, not a celebration. And BTW, we’re cooking out for everyone and let’s have a huge sale day! I wanted to fucking scream.
